Our tutors have many years of experience between them in planting fruit trees in the most varied situations imaginable. Fruit trees need to be given the best possible start – if planted properly, you have the best chance of being rewarded with decades of fresh fruit.

What will the Fruit tree planting workshop cover?

This workshop will give you plenty of hands-on experience planting fruit trees with guidance from the tutors. We will demonstrate the planting technique we have developed  over many years, using techniques and materials which will ensure the best possible start for your trees in a variety of conditions. You will also be helping the development of Racehill Community Orchard.

Deciding which tree(s) to plant can be a complicated business, but we will briefly look at the basics you need to consider including selecting varieties, rootstocks and pollination. We will also touch on how to grow fruit trees in small spaces and plant cordon trees against fences, walls, etc.

VideoWatch an introduction to our fruit tree planting technique (opens in a pop-up window).

Who is the Fruit tree planting workshop for?

The workshop is open to anyone over the age of 16, and no prior knowledge is necessary. It is relevant to anyone wanting to plant one or more fruit tree in their garden, school, allotment or in a community location.

The majority of the workshop will entail some digging and moderately heavy work, but participants but participants should not feel obliged to do anything they don’t feel up to. Do dress appropriately, however, as we will not be deterred by poor weather conditions.

Brighton Permaculture Trust aims to meet the needs of participants with physical disabilities and learning difficulties. If you have any issues which you feel may affect your ability to attend or participate in this workshop, please contact us to discuss them prior to booking.

"I loved the fact that we could all have a go at the different stages of planting: digging, planting depths, learning how to tie and secure, etc, and using different tools."

"All the BPT courses I have been on have been very good, well planned, clear and well organised. The mix of discussion and hands on was about right. I have planted fruit trees before, but now I feel I have a better understanding of how to do it right."
