Designers can save planet Earth!
Duncan Baker-Brown FRSA RIBA
Our damaging consumption and waste cycles are under scrutiny. Duncan Baker-Brown will address how we can better care for our world and ourselves: without Earth there is no us. He will be considering a number of exciting projects where ingenious designers, manufacturers, suppliers, and (de-) constructors are creating products and buildings that are designed to be the material banks for the future.
Duncan has practised, researched and taught around issues of sustainable development for over 25 years.
Examining well-being in housing schemes large and small – lessons from London
Dr Melissa Fernández Arrigoitia and Kath Scanlon
This talk will look at well-being in new housing schemes in London at two ends of the continuum: from very small, personal and resident-designed, to big, dense, speculative developments.
Melissa Fernández Arrigoitia is a Lecturer in Urban Futures at Lancaster University’s Sociology Department. Her interdisciplinary work focuses primarily on housing and critical geographies of the home.
Kath Scanlon is Distinguished Policy Fellow at LSE London. Her work is grounded in economics but also draws on techniques and perspectives from other disciplines including geography and sociology, and aims at improving the evidence base for policy decisions at national or local level.
Nurture and Nature – Approaches to Mental Health Design
Karen Flatt RIBA, IBI Group
Karen Flatt is an architect and Studio Director at IBI Group who specialises in mental health design and has a profound knowledge of both service-users‘ and healthcare professionals’ unique requirements. She has successfully designed and delivered numerous mental health schemes across different age groups and security levels.Karen will show how IBI are designing buildings to improve people’s mental health using well know initiatives such as ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ and ‘Biophilic Design’ alongside IBI’s own evidence based design tools such as ‘Sense Sensitive Design’ and ‘Emotional Mapping’.
Smart Urbanism
Kelvin Campbell, BArch RIBA MRTPI FRSA
Kelvin Campbell is a collaborative urbanist and writer. He is the chair of Smart Urbanism and the Massive Small Collective, an international network of collaborators facilitated by his son Andrew Campbell, a sustainability expert. Senior cohousing and wellbeing: A case study of New Ground, the OWCH (Older Women’s Cohousing) community
Maria Brenton
Maria Brenton is the UK Cohousing Network’s Senior Cohousing Ambassador, and a trustee of the UK Cohousing Network Trust. A former academic, she has for many years worked with the OWCH (Older Women’s Cohousing) group, who at the end of 2016, moved in to ‘New Ground’ Cohousing in North London, the UK’s first and only Senior Cohousing Community so far.
Maria will talk about the goals of the OWCH group, how they were achieved and how life in the community two years on is measuring up to original aspirations.
Biophilic Design: improving our connection with nature; improving the triple bottom line

Biophilic Design uses human’s innate attraction to nature and natural processes to improve the many spaces we live and work in. Oliver Heath will be investigating the science and style of Biophilic design, a key aspect of how we deliver improved health and wellbeing in the built environment.
