What drives us

Brighton Permaculture Trust champions sustainable living through permaculture. Through education, regenerative projects, and community initiatives, we foster resilience—transforming land, food, and buildings for a greener, fairer future.

Our Strategy: A Small Team with a Big Impact

If you’ve explored our Meet the Team page or browsed our projects, you might assume Brighton Permaculture Trust is a large organisation with a central office where you can drop by.

In reality, we operate lean and efficiently, without a central office and with a team largely made up of part-time and contractual staff.

Achieving More with Less

Our approach allows us to maximise impact while keeping costs low:

  • Our administration team works remotely and part-time, ensuring smooth course and event registrations while allowing flexible working.
  • Our tutors work with us on a freelance basis, running courses as needed.
  • Our fruit and orchard team works seasonally, scaling up when demand is high.
  • Brighton Permaculture Trust is managed by a dedicated core group of eight people, including four busy trustees who contribute their time voluntarily, though many also hold other paid roles within the organisation.
  • Everyone involved has other paid work elsewhere, yet they all commit significant voluntary time to keep our organisation thriving.

Powered by Volunteers

We are completely reliant on the support of volunteers—and without you, we couldn’t do what we do. Whether it’s harvesting apples, supporting courses, or helping in other ways, you are essential.

Making the Most of Limited Resources

With an annual turnover of around £250,000, we stretch every pound to deliver high-quality courses and events, and manage impactful projects with ingenuity, dedication, and plenty of elbow grease.

How You Can Support Us

Your involvement makes a real difference. Here’s how you can help:

  • Attend a course – Learn with us and deepen your knowledge of permaculture.
  • Volunteer – Help as much or as little as you’d like, on your own terms.
  • Follow & share – Connect with us on social media and spread the word.
  • Donate – every little helps to support our work

Together, we can spread permaculture principles, build connections, and create a healthier planet for future generations.
