What drives us

Brighton Permaculture Trust champions sustainable living through permaculture. Through education, regenerative projects, and community initiatives, we foster resilience—transforming land, food, and buildings for a greener, fairer future.

Building a Regenerative Future

Permaculture is about living in harmony with each other and nature. We use permaculture design principles as a toolkit to make a positive difference to communities in our city and across Sussex.

Our projects promote sustainable development—or better yet, regenerative development—ensuring that both current and future generations thrive.

Our work revolves around these key themes:

1. Skills and learning

We provide many learning and skill-sharing opportunities throughout the year to give people the knowledge and confidence to live in harmony with the planet.

Our courses are a shared journey of learning for regeneration, self-sufficiency and give real ways to reduce living costs.

We run free, family events in our orchards to connect people to the seasons, local food and community groups. We have also hosted many Green Architecture Day events to promote green buildings and low-impact living.

We also offer schools and corporate groups tailored hands-on sessions to inspire and connect people of all ages with nature and ways to help our planet to regenerate.

When people give their time and volunteer in our work, they gain regular opportunities to learn hands-on skills.

We offer reduced rates on our courses for people on lower incomes and offer free or low cost places to our volunteers when we can. We are actively looking for funding to bring learning opportunities to more people.

2. Our permaculture spaces

We lease several sites that are maintained by our volunteers. We use organic and no-dig methods to provide tranquil spaces for wildlife and people that also demonstrate regenerative land management, and grow food to share.

Our spaces are used by our courses and events, and by other community groups such as forest school and mental health support groups.

3. Our projects

Growing orchards: building communities

By planting school and community orchards we are improving spaces for people and wildlife, fostering community connections, and increasing access to healthy food.

We‘re working across Sussex, to provide access to free sources of healthy food to people who experience multiple indicators of deprivation (as defined in the English indices of deprivation), along with other health and wellbeing benefits that come from planting and caring for orchards. Working and supporting nature in this way, offers more people access to tranquil spaces – where they can physically and mentally escape.

Fighting fruit waste: Scrumped in Sussex

We turn fantastic local resources such as: apples, pears, plums, cherries, into delicious juices, ciders, vinegars and more.

This project is inspiring children and young people, and community members towards regeneration and fair share.
