Growing Orchards: Building Communities

Our vision transforms urban spaces into productive orchards. We believe that communities thrive when engaged with food growing.

Community & School Orchards

Sussex stands at the forefront of a green revolution, and much of this progress is owed to the collaborative efforts of Brighton Permaculture Trust and our dedicated partners. With over a decade of expertise, we have been empowering communities to plant and nurture orchards, fostering a sustainable legacy for the future. Why orchards? Watch the video to find out about their value to us and wildlife.

Racehill Community Orchard

Home to 200 fruit trees and a vibrant community of native hedgerow species, this orchard is a living testament to community engagement. Join us during our regular activity days, where everyone is invited to get their hands dirty or simply bask in the serenity of the space. We extend a warm invitation to schools and volunteer groups, encouraging them to join us in the shared joy of caring for an orchard.

Our Apple Orchards in Stanmer

Alongside the Stanmer Orchard Group, Brighton Permaculture Trust takes pride in the restoration the Old Stanmer Orchard and Home Farm Orchard. Additionally, we’ve expanded our efforts by establishing a new orchard at the Meadow Orchard and another near Earthship Brighton. These endeavours mark our commitment to preserving the rich heritage of orchards, cultivating green spaces, and fostering a bountiful future for our community.

National Collection of Sussex Apples

In September 2013, the array of Sussex apple varieties thriving in the orchards of Stanmer Park, achieved a prestigious status by being recognised as a National Collection. This collection serves as a vital genetic resource and reference site, offering valuable insights for both commercial growers and gardeners alike.
