Wednesday 30th April at The Avenue Orchard, Bevendean 10am - 3pm (or 2 sessions detailed below)
Nestled in the furthest corner of The Avenue, this Bevendean orchard boasts over 50 fruit trees. Local residents planted 13 fruit trees in 2019, followed by a further 14 Sussex apple trees and an impressive ring of 6 walnuts in 2021, with latest plantings in 2022 of 23 trees. Despite setbacks of vandalism, this growing orchard is adding essential biodiversity to an otherwise sea of green mown grass. Come and help green this dene.
This session is to provide aftercare to the orchard trees, in particular watering the trees if the weather is dry. Activities include: watering trees with long hoses; clearing weeds from around tree bases to help them thrive; mulching with woodchip to lock in moisture and keep competitive vegetation at bay; checking tree health & looking out for pests and diseases; emergency pruning of diseased, damaged, or dead branches; checking supports, protection and ties to help trees grow straight & strong litter picking.
If you are unable to attend for the full day there are 2 sessions from 10am - 12.30 and 1.00 - 3pm. Please indicate which sessions you can attend when signing up.
