Monday 3rd June - Highdown open space, Southwick 2pm - 4pm
Be part of something BIG! We’ve partnered with Adur & Worthing Council to plant community orchards at 3 of their Open Space sites and now we need help making sure they thrive. Today we will visit the Highdown open space site - which has 25 fruit and nut trees.
Community orchards are a vital part of the puzzle for future-proofing our cities. We’re going to need them to help provide shade in the summer to lower temperatures, draw up excess rainwater to prevent flooding and even provide us with local, zero miles healthy food. Not to mention providing a beautiful space to spend time in.
Tasks for the sessions include: clearing weeds from around tree bases to help them thrive; mulching with woodchip to lock in moisture and keep competitive vegetation at bay; checking tree health & looking out for pests and diseases; emergency pruning of diseased, damaged, or dead branches; checking supports, protection and ties to help trees grow straight & strong; litter picking.
