Thursday 9th May East Brighton Park, Whitehawk 10am - 1pm
With help from the community, we planted an orchard with 15 fruit & nut trees. Now we need to look after the trees, so we’ve got our work cut out for us!
Community orchards are are vital part of the puzzle for future-proofing our cities. We’re going to need them to help provide shade in the summer to lower temperatures, draw up excess rainwater to prevent flooding and even provide us with local, zero miles healthy food. Not to mention providing a beautiful space to spend time in.
Tasks for the sessions include: clearing weeds from around tree bases to help them thrive; mulching with woodchip to lock in moisture and keep competitive vegetation at bay; checking tree health & looking out for pests and diseases; emergency pruning of diseased, damaged, or dead branches; checking supports, protection and ties to help trees grow straight & strong; litter picking
