Kirsty gives us an update on what has been happening with Racehill Community Orchards since the lockdown.
“Despite having hardly any volunteers and no groups since last March, I have managed to make good progress with the upkeep of the orchard and it appears that I am finally keeping on top of the rampant brambles. If it wasn’t for the constant help from my two most regular volunteers, Christian Brodrick and Alison Garnham, this would not have been possible.
A hard-working member of The Brighton Conservation Volunteers group called Hugh has been working independently off his own back and has cleared two patches of land at the entrance to Racehill Orchard (the bits I call ‘No Man’s Land’). He has done a fantastic job. We have also been discussing with Bryn about getting some walnut trees planted in there.
And in a week or so, I will have been Session leader for Racehill for five years! In that time, it has seen a lot of volunteers come and go and is just getting better and better with more people using and enjoying it.”
