We will helping schools and communities across Brighton & Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex to plant many more fruit trees this winter. We have been working hard with our partners Action in rural Sussex and Brighton and Hove Food Partnership to enable a number of exciting projects and are using a increasingly complex funding arrangements to make them happen!
Some of the orchards we will be planting include:
In Brighton and Hove:
- At Craven Vale, 32 more fruit trees will be planted, taking the total planted with the residents association to around 60 trees. We will also be giving a hand planting a further 20 Sussex apple varieties in a clearing in the neighbouring woods.
- Following a favourable public consultation, Race Hill at the edge of Whitehawk will see an exciting project come to fruition this year. Here we will plant 30 fruit trees and hopefully shelter hedges, too, in what we hope will be the beginnings of a larger orchard. Read more.
- Adjacent to the newly built Sussex Records Office, ‘The Keep’, we will be planting 12 apple trees at Woollards Field with members of the local community and local schools. In keeping with the setting, we will be planting Sussex apple varieties and a white transparent apple which was once grown in an orchard nearby. -:- Read more.
- In Preston Park, we will be planting an orchard adjacent to the harvest demonstration garden.
