Great news! We’ve started planting trees at The Avenue site in Bevendean. The first 3 trees are now in place: Sussex Mother, Egremont Russet and Alfriston. We’ll be planting a further 11 Sussex apple variety trees and 6 walnut trees adding 20 trees to the existing 13-tree orchard planted in 2019.
Things were a bit different back then when around 50 community members turned up for a planting day and made short (and fun!) work of planting. This year finds us planting with very careful social distancing measures in place.
Community consultation continues to take place for the remaining sites in Bates Estate, Coldean and East Moulsecoomb with support from Trust for Developing Communities and BHCC Communities Team. These sites will be host to the remaining 50 trees being planted as part of the funded project. We’re hopeful that we’ll be able to run some community planting days in February but we’re also aiming to set up an online community where local people can share their tree stories about their local mini orchard.
