Saturday 1st March - Pruning at Stanmer orchards, Stanmer 11am - 3pm
Join Nick Casey for a pruning session in our Stanmer Orchards. These orchards contain various Sussex apple tree varieties at Stanmer Park and became part of the National Collection in 2013. Read more about it here. Winter pruning helps keep the trees healthy and can encourage good fruit production.
Important: This session is for experienced pruners or people who have completed one of pruning courses. Unfortunately we don't have the resources to train people during this session.
Please read for your safety - please be aware that our orchards are wild and wonderful places with many wild and wonderful plants and creatures. Nettles, ankle shredding brambles, rabbit holes and all the usual country hazards need attention too.
Your host
When you register you will receive an email which will give you his contact phone number in case you need to call him on the day
Practical stuff
- Food and drink to sustain you for the session (snacks, flasks, water etc).
- Gardening gloves if you have them
- Secateurs if you have them (we do have some spares)
- Sturdy footwear (no sandals) -
Clothing suitable for nettles, brambles, sun and rain. (Long trousers and sleeves are recommended unless you don’t care about stings and scratches).
Dress appropriately for weather conditions and outdoor work.
There are public toilets in the village and at One Garden nearby (please do not urinate in the orchards) and compost toilets if we are working near the earthship.
There is a cafe in the village if you want to buy food/drinks.
Please note that for all the activities all children under the age of 18 and people with support needs must be accompanied by a parent/carer who is responsible for their supervision, safety and any medication needed.
Directions
Meet at the Fruit Factory which is in Stanmer village almost opposite the cafe. See 2nd map down via this link:
The car parks at Stanmer are pay by phone only and mobile coverage in the park is not good. We recommend downloading the PaybyPhone app in advance.
If you don't have a smartphone you will need to set up a PaybyPhone account in advance.
